History of Event

             The history of this even occured in 1940 when the United States first started supporting an atomic weapons development program. This project was top secret and went by the secret name of Manhattan Project. It got its name after the district of Manhattan, where the engineering took place. The first step in this project was to work on producing the necessary elements for construction of the bomb. Oddly enough Albert Einstein, one of the most intelligent men of his time, was the one who proposed the idea of the atomic bomb to FDR. Albert got together a team of scientists from all over including one well known man by the name of Enrico Fermi. These scientists and engineers finally had their final product tested on July sixteenth of 1945 at the trinity test site in Alamogordo, New Mexico. By this time Allied powers had defeated Germany in Europe. On the other hand Japan had decided on fighting to the bitter end in the Pacific even though the odds were almost completely against them for the past year. This was also when president Truman took office. The United States had also come to the conclusion that the Japanese had become even more deadly while being face to face with near defeat. The Japanese caused about half the casualties suffered from the past three years during the middle of July. During this time the Japanese government refused the proposal for there unconditional surrender even though the United States clearly stated that if they do not cooperate with their demands the U.S. would follow through with "prompt and utter destruction". At this point General Douglas MacArthur was in the top military command position and wanted to follow through with the bombing and also had the idea of an immediate invasion following the bombing which was known as "Operation Downfall". But Truman was informed that this plan would end with a very high U.S. casualty rate. This is when Truman decided along with discussion with General Dwight Eisenhower and a collection of scientists from the Manhattan Project that the atomic bomb was the only answer at the time to immediately end the war. One of Truman's secretaries also suggested that the dropping of the bomb would not only end the war but also put the U.S. into a powerful enough position to greatly influence the outcome of the post war world. And then it happened. The first target was Hiroshima, a city located five hundred miles out of Tokyo which was home to about 350,000 people and a main manufacturing location. The bomb was dropped by parachute early in the morning and detonated two thousand feet above the city and reduced about five square miles to almost nothing, the bomb was named "little boy". Surprisingly this did not cause immediate surrender of Japan. Next the city of Nagasaki was was in the sights of the B-29 bomber that dropped the second bomb know as "fat boy" which exploded in the valley this city was located in reducing the blast radius to only about
